You can’t beat a simple sheath dress. It can be dresses up or down and can be worn year-round with the right accessories. I really love a sheath dress because it’s the perfect garment to wear when you don’t want (or feel) like putting in too much effort but still need to look like you tried. I tend to have at least a day or two (or three) during the work week where I just don’t feel like staring at my closet just hoping something nice jumps out at me.

Today’s post features a great go-to dress for those ‘I don’t want to try but I need to try’ days.

OVERVIEW

Simplicity 8293 is a sheath dress block with sleeve variations. For this project I constructed View C.

SKILL LEVEL

Very Easy. This pattern has handful of pieces and is a quick sew. This dress can easily be made in 2-3 hours and doesn’t have any complicated instructions.

FABRIC USED

For this project, I used a 100% cotton fabric I found on clearance at my local JoAnn.

ADJUSTMENTS

Of course, I made my usual tall girl adjustments. I added four inches of length to the hem of the dress. I original was going to make View B but decided to make View C instead. Since I changed my mind at the last minute, I used bias binding instead of the armhole facing.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES/EQUIPMENT

None.

LESSONS LEARNED/THINGS TO KNOW

This dress is kind of short so make sure you check out the finished garment measurements before cutting out your fabric.

OVERALL OPINION

I liked this pattern because it gives you instant gratification. It’s also an open canvas for a variety of fabrics. I might make this dress again but not anytime soon.
